The Chocolate has the ability to appear as a USB flash drive to your PC – meaning that no drivers are needed for more recent versions of Windows than Windows 98, and it can also be used with Macs or Linux machines.

To use this mode, simpy make sure your phone is on the standby screen, then connect it to your computer using the USB cable. After a few moments, the computer should have recognised it and the phone display will show “USB”. In this mode the phone will bounce any incoming calls, so it is best not to leave it like this for any length of time (Figure 1).

You can now access the phone as you would any other USB flash drive; on a Windows computer go to “My Computer”, and select “Removable Disk” (Figure 2), where you’ll find a set of folders for different types of content (Figure 3).

  • Text is for plain text files.
  • Music is where you’ll put your MP3s (Figure 4) – but they cannot be in subfolders or they won’t be found by the music player, which is awkward as you can’t keep tracks from the same album or artist together (Figure 5).
  • Photos is where you’ll find the pictures taken by the camera – but whilst you can upload other pictures from your PC to this folder the phone’s browser won’t display them so it is best to treat this as read only.
  • Videos contains videos taken on the phone, but you can upload other clips to this directory and view them on the phone.
  • Others is a general storage place; you can put anything you like in here, but you may not be able to read it on the phone – it allows you to use the phone as a flash memory stick to carry files between computers.

Remember to stop the connection properly before disconnecting the phone; on a PC click the “unplug" or "eject hardware” icon in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of your screen, then stop the removable disk. This ensures that all file transfers have completed before you pull the cable.
