The camera is activated by pressing the MP3/Camera button on the side of the phone (Or you can select the camera function from the Multimedia menu) (Figure 1). Obviously you need to open the keypad, otherwise the lens is hidden by the back of the phone!
To control the camera (Figure 2), press the left softkey. This pops up a menu allowing you to change several different parameters.
- Brightness is self explanatory, set it to whatever looks best (Figure 3)
- Image size. For the best general photographs, set this to be 1280x960 (though this will take up more memory). 176x220 is the correct size if you want a picture that fills the phone’s display. 72x72 should be used for photo caller ID. Only 320x240 and 640x480 can be used if you want to take multiple pictures quickly using the multishot facility (Figure 4).
- Self timer. This is useful if you want to get yourself into a group shot.
- Quality. This affects the amount of data compression used on the picture; lower quality lets you store more pictures, but at the expense of a more blocky look. Higher quality uses less compression, so it looks nicer but will take more memory (Figure 5).
- White Balance is used to compensate for different light conditions; for example, dull light may make pictures look yellow, which can be corrected in this menu.
- Album lets you look at your photos
- Mode selects single or multishot pictures. Multishot takes three pictures one after another, then lets you choose to save any or all of them. This is useful to help you catch the precise moment you wanted.
- Effect allows you to change how your picture will look, such as colour, sepia or negative (Figure 6).
- Flash turns the flash on and off
- Zoom lets you use a digital zoom. Generally you are better off not using a digital zoom, as it reduces the quality of your pictures (Figure 7).
To take a picture, press the OK button. You will then be given the option to save it or delete it. In multishot mode, each picture will be shown to you in turn, allowing you to chose which individual ones you want to keep (Figure 8).
