Setting up email

Matthew Haigh

You can send and receive emails from your LG KG800 mobile phone by following these simple instructions

The Chocolate is capable of sending and receiving email, as long as you have an email provider that gives you POP3 access to your mail.

To set up email, go to the Messages menu (Figure 1), Settings (Figure 2), Email (Figure 3), Account (Figure 4) (shortcut menu 5, 9, 3, 1), then choose the Add Account (Figure 5) softkey.

A long set of configuration options now need to be filled in.

Title is what you’d like to call this email account – choose anything you like (Figure 6).

User ID is your POP3 username, Password is your POP3 password (check your email provider for these details).

Next you can enter your email address and the outgoing and incoming mail servers (Figure 7). It is very likely that you’ll have to use your mobile network’s outgoing mail server, as for security reasons most Internet Service Providers won’t let you use their outgoing server unless you are connected to their network (which means that you are unlikely to be able to use your ADSL provider’s outgoing server, though you should be able to pick up email from their POP3 server).

The next option, “leave msg on server” is useful if you’d like to check your email from your mobile but download it to your PC later – set it to YES to avoid the phone deleting them after it has downloaded them.

Insert Signature allows you to automatically add some text to the bottom of every email; this could be your name and email address, a witty one liner or a corporate disclaimer (Figure 8).

Access Point is the name of the GPRS access point profile you want to use to connect to the net; this is set up and managed separately from the access point profile used for the web browser, even if you use the same network APN for both. Once this form is filled in, you will need to check the access point profile, which is found in the email settings menu. You should use the Internet details for your mobile network, entering the APN, username and password as found here (Figure 9).

The SMTP and POP3 port numbers should be left at 25 and 110 respectively, unless you have a very unusual setup with your ISP (Figure 10).

The last two entries are your outgoing server username and password (Figure 11). If you are using your mobile network’s outgoing servers you won’t need these. If you want to use your ADSL ISP’s mail servers you will need to check if they support SMTP authentication, and fill in the details that they give you.
