LG is said to be hard at work on smartphones running Microosft's Windows Phone 8 operating system

LG will launch smartphones powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform this year according to reports.

The news comes via Korea Times which cites an unnamed senior executive from one of LG's Korean partner firms as a source.

The source said LG would 'release quite a number of new Optimus devices this year' and 'also has some new smartphones in the works that will run Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.'

So far LG has remained fairly quiet on the subject of Windows Phone with only HTC, Nokia and Samsung having already launched devices based on the platform and Huawei showcasing its hardware at CES 2013.

There are still rumours that Microsoft may introduce its own Surface-branded phone this year, a factor which may have put some OEMs off the idea of creating devices for the platform.

But, LG is enjoying plenty of positive press off the back of its partnership with Google on the Nexus 4 handset, which has received glowing reviews all round.

LG is expected to debut more Optimus branded Android devices at Mobile World Congress in February, including the company's new flagship, the Optimus G2.

Could we also see LG windows Phones at the event in Barcelona? Time will tell, but we'll be in attendance and will be sure to bring you any info we hear.
