We review iTie, an app that opens the doors to the wonderful wonderful world of ties

If you’re the sort of person who likes to secure your tie in a quirky but sturdy way each day, you’re likely to enjoy this novel app. However, you probably also already know how to do a four-in-hand or a half Windsor, don’t you?

The menu is a little basic and bland, but the app makes good use of user-driven animation to show the various stages involved to get to the end knot result. Underneath each diagram, you’ll find some text detailing exactly what needs to happen, how and when. Although the images do lack colour save for the green instructional arrows.

If you press the ‘i’ button at the top of the main menu, you can adjust the step speed so step instructions run as quickly as three seconds or as slow as eight before moving on. Pressing the play button once you’ve selected your chosen knot will kick-start the instructional process. You can also use the back and forward buttons and pause in case you miss anything or already know that bit.

While the app comes with instructions as to how to tie five different types of knot, the end result looked the same in each case as far as we’re concerned. But then again, we prefer hook-on ties.

A bit of a novelty but unlikely to be something you’d need to use again and again.
