We detail some of the best applications and games for the HTC One

With its 4.7-inch 1080p SLCD 3 display and pixel density of 468ppi, the HTC One has one of the best displays ever included on a smartphone. It trounces Apple’s iPhone 5 and even beats Sony’s Xperia Z with regards to pixel densities thanks to its slightly smaller display. So far, it’s the best setup of 2013.

But the HTC One is more than just a display. You’ve also get Qualcomm’s new 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage at your disposal. It’s also LTE-ready and runs Android Jelly Bean (version 4.1) giving you access to Google Now, Project Butter, and of course Google Play.

Here’s a selection of applications and games that take full advantage of the One’s gorgeous HD display and bleeding-edge hardware. Needless to say, all of these apps and games have been road-tested, used, and abused by team KYM.

HTC One - Netflix

Netflix is the number one video-on-demand service in the US, featuring literally thousands of TV shows, films, and documentaries. The UK version isn’t quite up to scratch yet having less content than its US counterpart, but you can access the US version of Netflix from the UK by using a VPN service like BolehVPN.

Once you’ve signed up for an account you can get Netflix on a whole host of phones, tablets, TVs, and gaming consoles. This is a must have app – particularly when used with a VPN – for anyone that enjoys film and television but doesn’t want to cough up £30-odd a month for Sky.

HTC One - Shadow Gun: Dead Zone

Basically a multiplayer version of the truly awesome Shadow Gun. With the HTC One’s 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 processor and its accompanying Adreno 320 GPU, you have one of the best gaming smartphones currently available. Push it to the limit with multiplayer over 4G with this awesome FPS.

HTC One - FxGuru: Movie FX Director

If you’ve ever wanted to hoax a UFO sighting, blow up a building, or explode one of your friends, FxGuru is the application for you. The application features an assortment of visual FX from explosive action scenes to heart-pounding sci-fi footage, as well as virtual decals that provide guidance for each effect. And best of all, you get all that for absolutely nothing.

HTC One - BBC iPlayer and BBC Media Player

If you've missed your favourite BBC programme on the goggle box, why not catch up on the move? The BBC iPlayer and BBC Media Player allow you to watch any programme available on the desktop iPlayer on your phone. The only problem? Streaming does use up a lot of data so make sure you have an unlimited plan or high cap before starting the stream.

HTC One - SwiftKey 3 Keyboard

HTC might have made a few alterations to its stock keyboard, enhancing performance and making typing easier, but there’s still no way it’s better than what’s on offer with SwiftKey 3 Keyboard. Gesture-based typing, advanced dictionary settings, precise letter placement, and an algorithm that learns how you type are all included inside the latest SwiftKey release. This is the only keyboard you’ll ever need.

HTC One - Dead Trigger

Shoot the heads off zombies in this truly brilliant first-person-shooter. Created by Madfinger Games and available for free on Google’s Play Dead Trigger is one of the best games ever released on Android, and with your HTC One you’ll be able to play it exactly Madfinger Games intended with everything – graphics, animation, and AI - turned up to 11.

HTC One - Google Drive

Google Drive allows you to create the following documents: documents, spreadsheets, forms, and presentations. It’s a modern publishing suite based in the cloud that allows you to work across a variety of devices – PC, tablet, smartphone, laptop, and phone – seamlessly. If you’re serious about productivity then you need this application.

HTC One - iMediaShare

This little application does what Apple’s AirPlay does just on your HTC One, so if you have a smart TV or a HDTV connected to a PS3 or Xbox 360, you can use iMediaShare to pull content from a variety of locations – NAS drive, PC, external hard drive – and beam them straight to your TV via your HTC One.

HTC One - Pocket

Pocket works across mobile, tablet and PC and is one of the best applications for reading articles offline in a clean stripped down format. Experience is seamless and syncing is done whenever you’re connected to the web. And if that wasn’t enough to tempt, the app itself is free and looks brilliant on the HTC One’s full HD 1080p display.
