No Tegra 3-powered HTC handsets for CES 2012, says report

HTC is reportedly saving its big Tegra 3 handset launches for MWC 2012 – so don’t go expecting to see anything big from the Taiwanese manufacturer at next week’s CES 2012 expo.

The news comes via an investor note from JP Morgan Chase analyst Alvin Kwok who claims that HTC will withhold its NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core handsets [from next week’s CES 2012 event] and announce them at MWC in February instead.

We can see the logic in this, if we’re honest. CES 2012 is a sea of technology from practically every manufacturer on earth. So if you want your devices to take centre stage and get the attention they deserve, then surely it’s logical to save them for an exclusively mobile-related event?

News of the JP Morgan Chase investor note was originally broken by the Commercial Times, a Taiwanese newspaper.

The first NVIDIA Tegra 3 – quad core CPU – handset from HTC is expected to be the HTC Edge, which we’ve been hearing quite a bit about of late. Rumoured specs for the handset are as follows: 4.7-inch 720p HD S-LCD 2 display, 1GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage.

This 2.5GHz quad-core-powered Android 4.0 handset is also a possibility, as well.

One thing we’ll certainly be looking for with these new handsets is some new industrial design. HTC has been resting on its laurels of late, churning out similar-looking handsets one after the other – much to the display of consumers and journalists alike.

Another potential launch for MWC 2012 is the HTC Ville, which is an Android 4.0-powered device that is reported to use a dual-core Snapdragon processor and sport a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display.

CES 2012 kicks off next week. We’ll be there reporting live on all the happenings, launches and events. Expect lots of news, first-looks and previews of things to come in 2012.
