Rumour: Samsung working on sub-£100 Nexus 7-like slate for 2013
Samsung will launch a series of tablets in 2013 and one of which, according to reports, will cost less than Google’s Nexus 7
Samsung will apparently release a tablet in 2013 that’ll cost less than Google’s Nexus 7.
The news does come via DigiTimes, however, so please do take it with a pinch of salt. According to the Asian news source, Samsung will launch a 7-inch tablet that costs as little as $149.
We already know about the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, and Note 8.0. But this is the first we’ve heard about a sub-£100 tablet. At present nothing more is known about the device, although with MWC 2013 just around the corner perhaps we’ll be hearing more about it soon?
Samsung, keen to build on its 2012 successes, is expected to ship as many as 40 million tablet devices in 2013 – 15 million more than it managed in 2012. This increase will no doubt be carried along by the launch of the Note 8.0 alongside several other tablet and hybrid devices.
Our 2p? DigiTime’s report sounds pretty dubious to us – there are no sources, no images, and no evidence to back up its claim. To us that seems pretty dubious. Even more so when you factor in how much profit margin Samsung usually applies to its mobile products.
Still, it could be argued that launching a sub-£100 7-inch Android device in 2013 is one sure fire way to corner the market. It worked for Google. And if anyone can afford to take a hit in the margins it’s Samsung – it is the world’s biggest mobile phone company, after all.
More news as we get it.
