Unreal Engine 3 SDK for iOS and Android coming
Epic Games has announced its Unreal development kit will be available for iOS soon with Android to follow
One million downloads of Epic Games’ Epic Citadel must have had the desired effect, as the developer has announced its Unreal development kit (UDK) is coming soon, allowing developers to use Gears of War / Mass Effect graphics technology on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
The visually stunning free app only allows you to wander around a fictional castle realm, but that does not stop it from causing your jaw to hit the floor. Even on a 3GS, the surroundings look incredible. If mobile gaming is heading in this direction, we are very, very excited.
What about Android and other mobile platforms? Mark Rein, Vice President of the game development studio told Gamasutra, "We've demoed Unreal Engine 3 on Android with Tegra 2, and at the Korea Games Conference today we showed it on a Samsung Galaxy S device."
Exactly when the UDK will be released on Android is not known. Rein said that he suspects UDK will "eventually" support the Android platform, "but iOS is the priority for now."
Project Sword - the codename for the role-playing game, is due to hit this year. Until then, head on over the App Store to try out the Epic Citadel demo or look at some of our screenshots. iPhone 3G and other ‘older’ devices will not run the app.
