Jobs presenting the new iPhone 4 and all its new features

Published on Jun 7, 2010

Praise the Lord, the new iPhone 4 is here! And, as predicted, Apple has not let us down.

The new iPhone 4 features an absolute shed-load of new features, specs and design quirks - some of which, have never been seen before.

Check out our list of ten things we love about the new iPhone 4

Hardware
According to Jobs, the new “iPhone 4” is the most precise thing Apple has ever made. The new iPhone 4 is 9.3mm in thickness, which is 24 per cent thinner than the iPhone 3GS.

In terms of the iPhone 4’s chassis, it will be composed of a glass front and back and a stainless steel edging – so, similar to the one we’ve already seen.

However, Jobs says, “a lot of you have already seen, but believe me you ain’t seen it”

The new iPhone also has a shed load more external keys, they are as follows:
Volume up/down
Front facing camera
Micro-SIM
Camera with LED flash
Microphone on the bottom with the 30-pin Dock Connector and speaker
Headphone jack
Second microphone for noise cancellation
Power button

Screen
The new iPhone 4 display has a 326ppi display, which is pretty damn impressive. According to Jobs, there’s never been a display like this before. By using some grey pixels to smooth the edges, text looks like a fine printed book.

The new iPhone 4 has 3.5-inch display running at 960 x 640.

The human eye has a limit of about 300 ppi – so the new iPhone 4 exceeds this by over double. And this new feature works on text, images and video – which Jobs claims is “pretty amazing” – and we’re in agreement.

The screen is essentially four times better than the iPhone 3GS with a contrast ratio of 800:1, which means watching videos, browsing the web and viewing video will be a significantly heightened experience on the iPhone 4.

Processor
As predicted, the new iPhone 4G will use an Apple A4 processor, which was designed in-house by Apple and is the same one that is used in the iPad.

The new A4 processor’s advanced power management has also brought with it massive benefits improvements in how the iPhone 4 consumes power. For example, users’ will now get 7 hours 3G talktime, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 40 hours of music and 300 standby,

Storage
A lot of online rumours were suggesting that the new iPhone 4 would have up to 80GB of online storage, which would have been great. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case – the new iPhone 4 supports up to 32GB of onboard storage. That said, 32GB isn’t bad and you’d be hard pressed to find a device with more.

Gaming
Apple has done a right number on the iPhone 4’s gyroscope adding 6-axis motion sensing, which will make it brilliant for gaming as users’ will be afforded a whole new level of movement whilst playing video games on the iPhone 4.

According to Jobs, “It’s perfect for gaming, and one of the reasons is that it’s built into every iPhone 4, so you’ll know it’s there.”

Connectivity
Connectivity on a smartphone is seriously important – in fact, it is a necessity. Fortunately, the new iPhone 4 has this base well and truly covered, featuring Quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA, 7.2 Mbps down and 5.8 Mbps up, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi and GPS.

Camera
Apple has thankfully upped its game with the camera on the iPhone 4, which, at 5-megapixels, isn’t the best on the market, but it’s certainly an improvement on the iPhone 3GS’.

The new iPhone 4 camera has a back-illuminated sensor which makes taking pictures in low-light a hell of a lot better – and also significantly improves the quality of the images captured.

The camera’s sensor has 1.75-micron sized pixels, as well as 5x zoom, tap-to-focus and LED flash.

All in all, Apple has really done the business on the iPhone 4’s camera.

HD Video
As we predicted, the new iPhone 4 will feature HD video recording – at a 720p HD at 30fps. Plus, there’s also a built-in editor and one-tap sharing.
Another cool aspect is that you’ll be able to use the camera’s light whilst filming in the dark – and, you’ll also have the ability to edit HD films right on your phone, which is something not many phones offer.

Video clips, once edited, can be exported at 360p, 520p or 720p HD – making them ideal for sharing.

Multitasking
During the iPhone 4 keynote, Jobs was first to admit that Apple were a little behind on the multitasking thing – as they were on copy and paste. However, he claims that Apple wanted to get it right before diving right in there – and this is why it is only the iPhone 4 that has multitasking.

If it’s not done properly, it’ll affect the battery – and according to Jobs, the iPhone 4’s battery is vastly improved. And this is something everyone can appreciate.

iBooks
The iPad, which many laud as the saviour of publishing, is all about apps, books and magazines – among other things. And the clever people at Apple obviously figured it’d probably be best if they made the iPad and iPhone sync – and the good news is, this is a feature of the new iPhone 4.

Obviously, the improved screen resolution will make reading books a lot easier on the ol’ peepers, but the new iBooks app for the iPhone 4 will allow users to share books across all their devices – such as the iPad, iPod and iPhone – and at no extra charge.

Price
The iPhone 4 has had its price confirmed at $299, which is cheaper than the iPhone 3GS upon its release. In addition to this, the confirmed release date for the new iPhone 4 is June 24.

So basically the iPhone 4 has just added features which have been on other phones for a while such as Android, Palm, Nokia etc?
