LG at MWC 2012: What to expect

We take a look at all the devices LG is expected to launch at Mobile World Congress 2012

LG 3D Max
Yep – you read that right. LG is doing a follow-up to 2011’s disastrous LG Optimus 3D. This time around, however, things are said to be different with LG making lots of improvements – both in terms of design and performance.

So what’s new this time around? Well the device is thinner than its predecessor, according to reports, measuring just 9.8mm in thickness, which is a saving of just under 2mm. The device is also rumoured to be using a HD Super IPS display as well, which should translate into some pretty impressive visuals.

Our 2p? Just make sure the battery life is better this time around – half a day’s usage won’t cut it in 2012.

LG Optimus L Series
LG will be bringing three new handsets to Mobile World Congress (MWC) at the end of February, which will pave the way for more devices sporting its new ‘L-Style' design format.

L Series

The 3.2-inch Optimus L3 will be the first of these new handsets and will arrive in March following on from its debut at MWC.

After this, the Optimus L5 and L7 Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones will be launched during ‘the first half of the year' and will feature 4-inch and 4.3-inch displays respectively.

LG is keeping the spec line-up of these new devices under wraps, at least until MWC kicks off anyway, but the company was keen to outline its new design ethos.

‘L-Style's design philosophy is comprised of five aesthetic elements: Modern Square Style for a comfortable grip, Floating Mass Technology for a slimmer look, Seamless Layout for a more intuitive arrangement of keys, Harmonized Design Contrast utilizing metallic accents and Sensuous Slim Shape that naturally draws one's attention.'

Dr Jong-seok Park, president and chief executive of LG, said: ‘Design is consistently the top or second most important factor for customers when choosing a mobile phone.'

‘With smartphones, we sometimes took a more functional approach to design but with L-Style we're going back to our roots as a company focused on how our products fit into the lifestyle of our customers,' he added.

LG Fantasy/Miracle
Whether LG’s second Windows Phone Mango-powered handset will be called the LG Miracle or the LG Fantasy remains to be seen. But what is certain, at least according to a leaked report last week, is the device’s specs.

Fantasy

We covered the leak a few weeks back. According to the report, LG’s new Windows Phone feature a 4-inch NOVA touchscreen display with an 800x480 pixel WVGA resolution and will run a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Inside there's also 8GB of storage, an NFC chip, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It'll also pack a 5-megapixel primary camera capable of 720p video recording and a VGA front-facer.

LG X3
We’ve saved the best until last. The rumoured LG X3 is the company’s first ever quad-core Tegra 3 Android 4.0-powered smartphone. The handset is reported to feature a truly staggering 4.7-inch HD display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels, as well as Android Ice Cream Sandwich and an 8-megapixel camera.

X3

Not much else is known about the LG X3 but you can bet it’ll be a LG’s biggest announcement at MWC 2012. It’s the only phone that features a quad-core processor and Android 4.0. We’ve been let down by LG in past so we’re reserving judgement on this one until we’ve had a chance to put the device through its paces, which will hopefully happen at MWC 2012 next week.
