Sonim Technologies has introduced its first rugged 3G handset, the XP2 Spirit.
The Spirit has a unique octagonal shape to better withstand drops and direct hits. The 2-inch hi-res display is even protected by 1.5mm of scratch resistant Gorilla Glass.
The X2 Spirit also boasts a magnesium core and a waterproof outer shell made from hardened rubber, fibreglass and nylon, making it impervious to dust and micro-particles.
The handset is available with some fun features as well. It has a multimedia player which can handle video and MP3s. All sound, of course is extra loud and comes out of a GORE-TEX covered speaker for waterproofing. There I even a 3-megapixel camera with LED flash for higher quality pictures and video.
At Mobile World Congress Sonim was providing a mallet to attempt to smash the XP2 Spirit and a glass of water to dunk it in. Even Bob Plaschke, the CEO was offering nails to drive through a block of wood using the phone as a hammer.
The Spirit is also certified military standard MIL 810G - clearing it to handle conditions such as thermal shock, extreme temperatures, transport shock, solar radiation and salt water. Sonim have also provided a three year unconditional guarantee.
