Nokia is supplying three environmental campaigners with N79 Active handsets to track their progress over a 12,000-mile bike journey

Nokia is backing the efforts of three environmental campaigners as they take on a 12,000-mile bike journey across the world, powered only by their legs and a few solar panels. The idea of the mammoth trek is to highlight the potential of solar power to help keep climate change at bay.
Each of the cyclists will be supplied with an N79 Active handset, used to monitor their heart rates with to the Sports Tracker software. It’ll also be used to send their GPS travel data to the expedition’s website, so you can track their progress from your computer.
Altruistic as Nokia’s involvement may be in part, it’s also a good way to demonstrate the GPS and fitness features of the N79 Active, which can be used as an alternative to the iPhone’s popular fitness feature- the Nike+ transmitter peripheral.
The nine-month Solarcycle expedition started from London’s City hall today, Friday 15th May, with a send off by Boris Johnson. Alongside being able to track the voyage via the website, the cyclists will also be using the N79 Active handsets to make a YouTube video diary in each of the 14 countries they visit. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on their progress.
