Nokia has just announced the 6216 Classic handset with embedded Near Field Communication chipset

Published on Apr 24, 2009

The Nokia 6216 Classic has been revealed by Nokia as a 3G equipped, Near Field Communication capable mobile.

The 6216 Classic isn't the first Near Field Communication (NFC) device we've come across, but it is the first to offer the NFC services integrated with the SIM to provide a hassle-free solution for payment and ticketing.

NFC allows users to transfer files, like you would with Bluetooth or Infrared normally, but it goes a whole lot further than that. Simply by swiping the handset near an NFC terminal it can be used to pay for products, services and tickets without the need for entering any information whatsoever as the payment details are encrypted onto the SIM.

Aside of having embedded NFC capability the Nokia 6216 is a fairly standard looking candybar handset and will come with an unspecified-megapixel digital camera, FM radio, 3G connectivity and microSD support up to 8GB.

Despite the technological advances of NFC, it has been slow to take off and due to the current economic climate a full scale roll-out of NFC services and terminals has been delayed until 2010.

We can expect to see the 6216 on the shelves in Q3 2009 with a retail price of €150.
