Rumours suggest that Microsoft's Zune media player software will be coming to Windows Mobile phones via an over-the-air update

Published on Apr 16, 2009

Rumours circulating on the web have suggested that Microsoft will allow Windows Mobile phone users to download the Zune media player software onto their mobile devices.

Rethink Wireless has speculated that the platform will support Microsoft's Zune software rather than Windows Media Player, which hasn't seen a significant update over the last couple of years.

The hints have come about after it was revealed that Microsoft is searching for a marketing agency to promote a project codenamed 'Pink' that will involve bringing Zune's multimedia software to other devices.

The devices will then be able to squeeze more easily into the music category, alongside such competitors as Sony Ericsson's Walkman devices and Nokia's XpressMusic range.

Microsoft has been toying with the idea of distributing minor firmware updates over the air and it has been suggested that the Zune media player update will be implemented via a wireless update.
