Vodafone's exclusive Android handset, the HTC Magic Pioneer will be available from the beginning of May

Vodafone has announced that its Google Android-based Magic Pioneer will be available from the 1st May.

The second Google Android phone out into the market, following T-Mobile’s G1, will be available for free on relatively cheap £25 per month contracts. Considering you’d currently have to pay more than £40 a month to get a free iPhone on O2, it seems like a relative bargain.

Since Android is fresh out of the starting blocks though, the operating system may not appear as attractive to some as Apple’s offering. As an open source platform, there’s a good deal of potential in Android’s future, while rumoured talks between T-Mobile and Google concerning the distribution of a third Android handset only fuel the platform’s status as a serious Apple competitor.
