Motorola quietly withdraws movie service

Motorola has closed the movie service that it was previously offering in conjunction with Paramount

Published on Mar 24, 2009

Paramount and Motorola’s movie service has now closed its doors less than a year after opening up shop.

The service launched in June last year with little fanfare and at launch offered Paramount box office hits as well as a somewhat limited back catalogue.

Motorola Movies didn’t offer a direct-download service; instead, purchased films were downloaded to a computer and then transferred across to compatible handsets. The cost of purchasing a movie ranged from £5.99- £8.99 across the service but with lacklustre uptake and Paramount as the only major studio backer Motorola’s movie service always faced an uphill struggle.

Clearly Moto’s failed endeavour in this area doesn’t concern the bods over at Samsung though as it just announced last week that it will be offering its own movie service to its high-end devices such as the upcoming Tocco Ultra HD.

R.I.P. Motorola movie service. Hands up who actually knew it existed before now.
