Motorola cans the Alexander

Motorola has revealed that the previously leaked Alexander won't be officially launched

Motorola has abandoned its high-spec handset called Alexander which was planned to be a QWERTY-equipped slider phone.

The handset was originally due out at the end of last year, a date which was then pushed back to Q1 of this year, and now as we approach the end of the first quarter there are claims that the Alexander will never make it to market.

According to digitimes.com the report was originally published in Chinese-language Commercial Times and said “Motorola has cancelled the planned launch of the Alexander handset and also reduced the number of markets in which it will sell its A3100 smartphone.”

The Alexander was due to launch alongside the Atilla, or A3100, and was planned as having an 8-megapixel camera, running an unspecified version of Microsoft’s OS and having Nvidia graphics on-board.

With Motorola’s rumoured upcoming swathe of Google Android handsets we’re wondering if the Illinois-based folks have abandoned Windows Mobile permanently or just until Windows Mobile 7 is ready for release, either way this is one Microsoft-based device that doesn’t look like it’s coming our way anytime soon.
