Virgin has launched the cheapest pay monthly tariff to date with 100 mins, 100 texts plus a free mobile for £8.50 a month

Virgin has launched a new £8.50 a month tariff, the UK's lowest to include substantial free calls and texts, plus a free phone.

The £8.50 price is subject to an 18-month contract and, as you might imagine, you're not going to be netting yourself a free Wii or high end handset for that sort of monthly outlay. However, there's a reasonable choice of handsets available gratis at the moment.

From the Samsung stable, you can have the G600, U600 or J700. From the LG range, you're offered the KE970 shine and the KC550, while from Nokia you can have the 3120 or 7100.

Your £8.50 gets you 100 cross-network minutes and 100 texts. It may not be a particularly substantial package, but for the money it represents good value in these penny-pinching times.
