The top 10 Android Market applications
Andrew Williams
The Android Market has been living in the App Store's shadow since its launch, but what does the average Android user download?

We could easily reel out half a dozen top 10s from the iPhone App Store, ones for each section of the store just as easily as one for every day of the week.
However, having been active for more than six months now, it's an active and dynamic place where publishers are getting wise and exploiting all sorts of price drop and update strategies to try and get their title onto the Top 25.
The Android Market is a different bag of bolts, though. Developers can still try and make their titles as eye-grabbing as possible, but since it has been a freebie-only marketplace up til now, there's less potential for juicy marketing deviousness.
This has left the Android Market's Top 10 most popular titles since October 31st more a case of function over fart simulators. Here's the run-down.
- The Weather Channel – Up-to-date weather reports
- MySpace Mobile – Myspace on your phone
- ShopSavvy –Scan the barcodes on products and compare them online
- Daily Horoscope –Daily astological readings
- Free Dictionary Org – A dictionary, obviously!
- Ringdroid – Create your own ringtones using MP3 files
- Backgrounds – 50,000 wallpapers to customise your phone
- Barcode Scanner – Similar to ShopSavvy
- Save MMS – Save your images, video or audio from MMS text messages directly to your memory card
- Compare Everywhere – Yet another barcode-scanning app
Now that paid apps are starting to surface and with news of the arrival of Guitar Hero World Tour guaranteed to cause salivation in those Android users who are jealous of their iPhone-owning friends, it'll be interesting to see how this Markets top 10 develops over the coming months. Here's hoping it won't be plagued by fart simulators like the App Store's entertainment section.
