LG has unveiled a solar powered handset, giving three minutes call time from a ten minute solar charge

Published on Feb 13, 2009

LG has unveiled a solar powered handset, although as yet the name of the device hasn't been confirmed.

The company claims the battery will charge enough over ten minutes to power a three minute phone call.

Although an interesting concept, the idea of a solar powered handset would mean changing the way you use your phone to an extent.

The solar panels are on the back of the phone itself, so you wouldn't be able to keep the phone in your pocket all day.

Obviously, to charge effectively the device would have to be laid face-down with a decent light source shining directly onto the panels.

The phone is made of bio-plastic and, much as Samsung did with the solar powered phone we covered just yesterday, LG is keen to point out all the hazardous substances that aren't involved in its production including lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium 6, mercury, PBDE and PBB.

At the heart of the device is a conventional battery, so it will presumably also be compatible with some form of conventional charger.
