The Asia Pacific region is responsible for the largest chunk of this, accounting for 42.5 per cent of the total. Europe comes in second at 34.2 per cent, while North America claims a relatively meagre 16.9 per cent.

In content terms, music and ringtones were the largest earners at $11.7 billion. Video earnt $6.7 billion and games took third place with $5.5 billion.

Projections for the future predict an expansion of these figures, with the large-sounding $23.9 billion paling in comparison to the $47.2 billion annual figure that's expected by 2013.

Interestingly, their 2013 predictions see video increasing at the quickest relative pace, expanding to almost three times its current size in revenue terms.
