According to internet rumours, we could see handsets featuring the next iteration of the Windows Mobile OS, version 6.5, at the end of Q3 2009. It's also suggested that version 7 could follow as soon as April 2010.
The comments made by M.J Foley on Zdnet cite industry sources as the basis for this information, if accurate, the code for Windows Mobile 6.5 could be officially released to mobile phone manufacturers in the next eight to ten weeks.
Few details about the actual upgrades and what to expect from the new operating systems have been revealed but there has been a lot of crossed-fingers out there hoping for multi-touch and gesture recognition support.
We're expecting Microsoft to announce more information, at least about Windows Mobile 6.5, at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
