Nokia set sights on emerging markets
The announcement of a range of phones from Nokia aimed directly at emerging markets, and priced between 25 and 90 euros, landed on our desk today.

In an attempt to break away from high and mid-range handsets, Nokia has announced seven lower-range handsets for emerging markets.
Nokia’s cheapest music phone to date, the 5130 XpressMusic will form the more expensive end of the range; as will the 7100 Supernova camera phone. The mid-range is taken care of by the 2320 classic, 2323 classic and the 2330 classic and the cheaper models are the Nokia 1202 and 1661; priced at €25 and €30 respectively.
Internet options on handsets include Mail on Ovi and Nokia Life Tools (NLT) services. Mail on Ovi allows users to create and access email accounts without the need for a PC and is primarily used on series 40 phones currently.
Likewise, icon-based information services that form a part of NLT will be delivered by SMS, overcoming potential problems caused when lacking GPRS coverage. The service will launch initially on two handsets in India in the first half of 2009, to be followed by expansion to Asia and Africa later in the year.
We are left wondering though if €90 is really that cheap for an emerging market handset?
