Julian Assange told smartphone and Gmail users: 'You're all screwed.'

The Wikileaks founder claims over 150 companies worldwide are selling personal details retrieved from email and smartphone use, including location data.

It's also alleged phone calls are being listened to and messages intercepted.

Speaking at a press conference at City University, Assange asked: 'Who here has an iPhone? Who here has a BlackBerry? Who here uses Gmail? Well, you're all screwed.'

'The reality is, intelligence contractors are selling right now to countries across the world mass surveillance systems for all those products,' he added.

Assange said the whistleblowing of the 'totalitarian surveillance state' is what he describes as a 'mass attack on this mass surveillance industry'.

Although he makes it clear the interception is lawful, the release of 287 documents in conjunction with website spyfiles.org will shed more light on 'a covert, very secretive, small industry'.

The news comes just as a number of US smartphones have allegedly been found to be tracking users.

Carrier IQ software found in a number of phones has supposedly been keeping tabs of location data, messages and even general phone use, according to a developer who released a YouTube video to back-up his claims.
