We take a look at RIM’s newly unveiled BlackBerry Z10 and see how it stacks up to Apple’s iPhone 5

It’s the dawn of a new day for RIM, as the Canadian company dropped the curtain on its next generation of BlackBerry smartphones, devices which, without wanting to over egg the pudding, bear the weight of the company’s success or failure upon their narrow shoulders.

First under the microscope is the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 and to put it through its preliminary paces we’re holding it up against the iPhone 5.

Power

The iPhone 5 is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU and also offers a PowerVR SGX543MP3 tri-core GPU.

The device has 1GB RAM too, and comes with 16, 32 and 64GB storage options.

The new BlackBerry Z10 is powered by a dual-core chip too, but clocked to 1.5GHz. The device relies upon an as-yet unnamed GPU and also offers up 2GB RAM and comes with 16GB of on-board storage plus space for a micro SD card of up to 32GB capacity.

Camera

The iPhone 5’s 8-megapixel primary camera is famously good, and it offers an LED flash, simultaneous HD video and still capture, autofocus, panorama, HDR, face detection, 1080P capture and geo-tagging.

The device’s secondary camera is a 1.2-megapixel offering which is more than adequate for FaceTime calling.

The BlackBerry Z10 has an 8-megapixel primary snapper too, with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, continuous auto-focus, image stabilisation and face detection. The primary camera captures video at 1080P too.

RIM has seen to it that the Z10 gets a quality front-facer as well, with a 2-megapixel sitting pride of place on the front of this demure but attractive smartphone.

Display

The BlackBerry Z10 is fronted by a 4.2-inch screen which operates at a resolution of 768 x 1280 and has a fantastic 355PPI pixel density.

Whereas the iPhone 5 offers up a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD screen running at 640 x 1136 with a pixel density of 326PPI.
