RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook's US release date has been confirmed — it’s coming April 19 to a host of retailers in the States

RIM’s first tablet device, the BlackBerry PlayBookwill launch April 19 to a host of US retailers, still no word on an official UK release date though.

One of the first stores to confirm the PlayBook was Office Depot. The retail store confirmed the PlayBook’s release via a press release.

Here’s the official line from Office Depot:

“Office Depot provides customers with the most innovative lineup of products that will help them take care of business, and the BlackBerry PlayBook is certainly one of those game-changing products,” said Randy Wick, the company’s Vice President of Merchandising.

There’s been more than a few issues with the PlayBook since it was first announced way back in 2010. Nevertheless, RIM seems to have got its act together and the QNX-powered PlayBook looks like it is finally making its way to market.

We’re still waiting for RIM to give the official nod in the UK, but with a US release date now confirmed it realistically can’t be that long.

“There has been a lot of buzz and excitement for the BlackBerry PlayBook to hit the market, and we are thrilled to be one of the first retailers to offer this professional-grade tablet,” said Wick.

US punters will be able pick up the PlayBook in the following flavours: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB for $499, $599, and $699 respectively.

RIM, in our opinion, seems to have the pricing right but will it be enough to persuade users away from Apple’s iPad 2 and towards RIM’s QNX-powered PlayBook?

It’s difficult to say, BlackBerry is a big brand, particularly in the States, but when you compare RIM’s applications store and reputation to Apple’s App Store and current popularity, it’s difficult to see where RIM will get a look in – both here and in the US.
