Follow our guide to learn all the typing shortcuts on the Apple iPhone

Apple has kindly extended the .com 'click and hold to expose more options' feature from Safari to the standard keyboard. At the moment these are somewhat limited but we expect more to bre rolled out in due course.

If you click and hold on the - (dash) you will see the option to enter – (em dash).

If you click and hold on the ” (close double quotes) you will see the following options: » « „ ” “ "

If you click and hold on the £ (pound sign) you will get the following options: ¥ $ ¤

If you click and hold on @ (at sign) you will get the option to enter §

Also if you quickly want to enter a number or punctuation when you are typing click and hold on the Number/Punctuation key labelled .?123 then slide across to the character you want. The iPhone will enter the character and autmatically flick back to the Qwerty keyboard.

The space bar shortcut

When you are writing in Mail, Calendar or Notes or quick double tap of the space bar will automatically insert a full stop followed by a space and then automatically capitalise the next letter.

Click on Select and two pins will appear on either side of a highlighted word - move these so that all the text you want to copy is highlighted (Select All obvious highlights all the available text). A pop up will appear with the word Copy or Cut/Copy/Paste - click on this to cut copy the selected text to the clipboard.

Open a new application or document and click on the place where you want to paste the copied text. Another pop up will appear with the option Paste. Click on this paste the copied text into the new document. Simple, isn't it?

To copy an image just hold and press your finger on the image you want to copy. You will be promted where you want to Save Image or Copy. If you save the image it will be downloaded into the Camera Roll in your photo album. If you click on Copy the image will be copied to the clipboard and can then be pasted into a new document in the same way as you paste text.

Note: you can use the text selection pins to delete as well as copy. Select the text you want to remove then just click on the Backspace button. Away it goes!

When you are typing in Mail, Safari, Notes or Messaging and have messed something up just shake your iPhone.

An alert will pop up asking whether you want to Undo Typing - or remove what you have just entered.

If you do it then change your mind don't panic - just shake the phone again and you get the option to Redo Typing to bring it back again. Marvellous.

This makes it much easier to type quickly and without typos because there is more space around each key. Now Messaging, Notes and, best of all, Mail support the landscape keyboard.

Just rotate the handset so its on the horizontal axis when the keyboard is active.

We find that using two thumbs with the landscape keyboard yields the best results - but we've seen people typing away with up to six fingers quite happily.
