We compare HTC's One X with the iPhone 5's rumoured specs

The world is waiting for the arrival of Apple's next-gen iPhone, and the Web is awash with rumours, leaks and speculation regarding the device, which is a nailed-on certainty to become the most popular smartphone of 2012, but what if a better device is already here?

HTC's One X is a smartphone that boasts plenty of cutting edge features, a beautiful sleek design and a rapidly developing operating system that is gaining in popularity every day, but how does it stack up against what we are reportedly going to get from Apple's next smartphone?

Apple's iPhone 4 set the standard for modern mobile screens with its Retina Display, and rumours suggest that the iPhone 5 will launch with the next step in the technology's development, boasting more pixels per inch and a boost in size, with gossip pointing to a 4, or even 4.6-inch screen.

HTC's One X features a 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD2 display which is both responsive and a delight to behold. It offers excellent clarity and, with a pixel density of 317PPI, superb, pin sharp visuals.

The One X's screen operates at a resolution of 720 x 1280 and also has a layer of Corning's Gorilla Glass in place to prevent any accidental scrapes or knocks.

Winner - Draw

The HTC One X is a powerful smartphone.

It comes packed with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset consisting of a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU and next-gen ULP GeForce GPU, giving it more than enough power to take on virtually anything on the market.

The device also features 1GB RAM and 32GB of on-board storage,  but support for Micro SD cards is gone so once you've used up your space you'd better start deleting things.

Rumours suggest that Apple's iPhone 5 will feature the company's new quad-core A6 processor, which is likely to be conservatively clocked at around 1GHz.

The device isn't likely to boast any more than 1GB RAM and removable memory is a term that isn't even in Apple's sphere of consciousness so don't get your hopes up.

Winner - HTC One X

The next iPhone is likely to have a totally different form-factor to the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Various rumours have done the rounds suggesting that Apple will look to revolutionise the smartphone market with the new device, with curved displays, round bodies and all sorts of other mumbo jumbo being discussed.

We aren't so sure. The device will almost certainly feature a new design and we're sure it will be minimalist and stunning to look at (because that's what Apple does best) but we aren't anxiously awaiting anything out of this world.

The HTC One X is a well designed device which measures 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm and weighs a paltry 130g.

It has a minimal facade with touch sensitive buttons and a grippy back panel to add some confidence when you're using the phone.

On prior form alone we're giving this round to Apple.

Winner - Apple iPhone 5
