Samsung's Galaxy S3 has outsold the iPhone 5 in the run up to Christmas and is the UK's top-selling phone

Analysis of UK smartphone sales has revealed the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the UK’s most popular handset for the seventh month in a row and it’s even fended off competition from Apple’s recently launched iPhone 5.

Interestingly, the iPhone 5 is in third place in the uSwitch survey results, which aggregated pre-orders and pay monthly contract sales, Apple’s new flagship has been outperformed by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, which has clearly been more popular with consumers in the current economic climate.

Likewise, the Samsung Galaxy S2, now quite an old dog, is still in the top pile at fourth place while the recently launched Nexus 4 has shot straight into fifth place having sold out within 30 minutes of its release.

Apart from the pair of recent iPhones the top 10 is dominated by Android handsets.

It’s still not clear which model will take the number one spot for Christmas, however.

While the Galaxy S3 could retain its lead uSwitch analyst Ernest Doku concedes that the iPhone models could catch up with continued low-price deals as recent price cuts have created a boost in sales.

It was recently revealed that Sony has beaten HTC to the number two spot behind Samsung as one of the UK’s highest-selling phone brands, Doku commented on this in relation to the new figures:

‘The combination of the Xperia T’s Bond-related campaign and affordable Xperia U have seen them have greater longevity over HTC’s frequent, yet brief, appearances in the chart with One Series devices,’ he said.
