Sony has admitted its smartphones aren’t up to scratch but vows to do better in 2013, wants a iPhone5/Galaxy S3 contender on his hand

Sony is set to launch a handset alongside flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5, according to one of its top brass.

Speaking to The Financial Times Deutschland, Sony Mobile's sales chief, Dennis van Schie, said the following: ‘We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.’

The device in question, according to Tech Crunch, will be launched at CES 2013 and MWC 2013 in Q1 of next year. Know Your Mobile will be at both expos and is looking forward to seeing Sony’s next-generation of smartphone devices.

On the question of whether Sony plans on making a Windows Phone 8 device, Schie added:

‘We have a good relationship with Microsoft and the development of Windows Phone are watching closely. If it succeeds, we will not be caught off guard.’

Does that mean Sony has a Windows Phone-powered device in development, primed to launch at the drop of a hat, or when Windows Phone actually becomes a contender in the space?  Perhaps.

Sony’s current flagship, the Xperia T, not only features in the latest James Bond film, SkyFall, bit also packs in a myriad of high-end specs and features including a dual-core 1.5GHZ S4 Plus, NFC, 4.6-inch 720p display, and a 13-megapixel camera.

We can’t wait to see what Sony does next.
