Apple has knocked Argos down into to third, making it the second most popular online retailer in the UK

Apple is now the second most popular online retailer in the UK.

Apple knocked Argos down into third place, according to IMRG-Hitwise's latest ecommerce research.

Top of the pile is Amazon, which is really not at all surprising considering the online force it's become in recent years, thanks to the success of the Kindle Reader and unrivalled customer service.

James Murray, a Hitwise market, said: 'The launch of the iPhone 4S has helped push Apple to its highest ever ranking in the Hot Shops list.

'Online shopping is stronger than ever and year-on-year we've seen UK internet visits to the online retail category grow by three per cent. This is despite the ongoing global economic turmoil, which has resulted in lacklustre bricks and mortar retail performance.'

Amazon recently released a new tablet, the Kindle Fire, in the US. A UK date hasn't been announced but we are hoping for a Christmas 2011 arrival.

Does anyone else think it's odd all of the top three retailers all begin with the letter 'A'? No? Just us then.

Thanks BCS.
