NitroX X735 Bluetooth earphone review

We review the NitroX X735 Bluetooth headphone, and find keeping things simple isn't stupid

Published on Oct 18, 2009

The NitroX X735 Bluetooth headphone set is one of those lovely pieces of kit that do exactly what they're designed to do, in the most straightforward possible way.

The NitroX X735 lets you listen to music and pick up calls from your phone. Pretty basic, but its simple style is its clever selling point.

To start, the headphone jack is a 3.5mm one, letting you use your own headphones or the included ones, which actually offer pretty decent sound quality. Unlike many Bluetooth headsets, you won't be forced to fiddle with adaptors or be stuck with proprietary headphones.

Keeping with the simple is better theme, there are three whole buttons – the main function one and a pair of volume controls (plus the on-off switch). Want to pick up that call? Hit the centre button. Want to flip back to your song? Just push it. Want to set the X735 into pairing mode? You've probably figured it out by now.

And if you've clipped the X735 into position close enough to your face, picking up that call really is as simple as pushing that button, as there's a built in mic on the device. You don't have to pop it or flip it out, it's just there when you need it. As with any built-in mic, the sound quality isn't perfect, especially in noisy situations. But if you're driving along in your car, you'll have no difficulty with the NitroX X735.

And if you are driving along, you don't have to take out your phone to see who's calling, as the X735 pulls in caller ID details onto its OLED screen. Showing some nice attention to detail, NitroX have included a feature which lets users flip the orientation of the screen, so you can wear it on either side of your shirt and not have to read incoming call details upside down.

For something you'll be wearing on your shirt, the best thing that can be said of the NitroX is that it's fairly non-descript. About two inches in length in shiny black plastic, it's not the most fashionable of accessories, but NitroX has kept it slick by covering up the USB port and keeping labelling to a minimum.

The NitroX X735 offers about six to seven hours of battery life and supports Bluetooth specification 2.0.

All in, it's effortless to use – which is exactly how a Bluetooth headset should be.
